LGBTQ+ pride is a year-round thing in Madison.

Opting for openness over “us vs. them” and kindness over competitiveness, we’re a city known for its progressiveness. We recognize there’s lots of work to be done, and we’re proud that LGBTQ+ owned-and-operated businesses (and LGBTQ+ friendly businesses) continue to flourish here.

Though the big pride event in Madison isn’t until August, we’ve got more than 35 LGBTQ+ businesses to support while you’re eating, drinking and traveling your way through Madison. See more…

Beer Baron: Delta Beer Lab brews a pizza-pairing pale ale worth remembering

You don’t need to be a beer-pairing genius to know that pizza and beer are like peanut butter and jelly, but from a culinary and tasting perspective, this perfection works on many levels. The beer’s carbonation cuts the rich fattiness of the cheese and scrubs away the saltiness. A little zing of the right hops can balance a sweet sauce or complement a spicy one. Crust and malt are brothers from another mother. See More…

Unity is always on tap
at Delta Beer Lab

The pandemic, an exhausting election, and every single fight on social media continue to bring a lot of anger and division. So, wouldn't it be nice if we could all just work out our differences and have a beer together? Ok, it's more complicated than that, but a local brewer is trying to get us closer to that idea. The craft beer boom means breweries are a dime a dozen, but one called Delta Beer Lab has a different value in the community. See More…

cheers to community building at delta beer

Simultaneously checking all those boxes may sound nearly impossible, but so far Delta Beer Lab is doing just that—and more—on the southside of Madison. See More…

Livability
2020 Top 100 Best Places to Live
#3 Madison, WI

Madison is a town that defies definition. It’s a sports-crazy college town, but also the staid seat of state government. It’s a great place for millennials and recent grads, with a high employment rate, but also rated among the best places in the country to retire. It’s an active urban city with a spectacular food scene that runs the gamut from stellar cheap eats to award-winning fine dining, and it’s an outdoor paradise surrounded by lakes and public land. Full of contradictions, Madison is many things to many people and that’s what makes it a great place to live.

Best Local Beer/Brewery: Delta Beer Lab is new and small, but has quickly carved out a niche in the busy Madison brewery scene.

BRN.02 Dirty Chai Brown Ale Delta Beer Lab

Wisconsin State Journal
Beer Baron: Feel the BRN.02
with this ‘dirty chai brown ale’

Delta Beer Lab, opened in February 2019 by Tim “Pio” Piotrowski, is a play on effecting change; delta is the symbol for change in math and science. So that’s a mission statement.

But in practice, it means inclusiveness for people of all genders, races and sexual orientation — a challenge for the broader beer community.

It means dedicating a nonprofit each month to receive all tips from the taproom. The staff do not rely on tips because they’re paid living wages and benefits, though the nonprofit program was suspended so tips could support the staff during the pandemic’s worst stretch from April through June.

BRN.02

Style: “Dirty chai brown ale” with coffee and chai spices.

Brewed by: Delta Beer Lab, 167 E. Badger Road, Madison. What it’s like: Maybe I still have pumpkin pie spices on my brain, but this drinks a bit like a cross between its base beer — BRN.01, the coffee brown ale that is Delta’s most-checked-in offering on Untappd — and a spice-forward pumpkin beer.

Where, how much: The four-packs of 16-ounce cans are available in bottle shops across town, but if you can stop by the South Side taproom to pick it up, do that. Most four-packs are $12 at the brewery, but BRN.02 fetches $15.

Booze factor: Brown ales are low on this spectrum, and BRN.02 checks in at 5.2% ABV.

Up close: BRN.02 pours a lovely chestnut brn — er, brown — with a warm, sweet aroma of those chai spices (cardamom, cinnamon, clove, ginger, honey, vanilla and black pepper) foremost.

A sip starts with balance, with coffee (roasted by neighboring Kin Kin), chai and malt all mingling together more or less indistinguishably. The word that keeps coming to mind about these spices is warm, and after a couple of sips that temperature heats up a little past that, maybe into hot territory. The chai aspect definitely overtakes the beer (and coffee character), which will be polarizing.

BRN.02 has a medium to light body and comfortable mouthfeel, but all of the flavor, particularly from those cozy spices, transform this brown ale from an easy-drinking pub snack to a sipper. There’s a lot going on, but the hints of nutty, toasted caramel malt are enough to make me want to try a BRN.00 brown ale without the coffee or chai dressing. See More…

Madison breweries join ‘black is beautiful’ campaign for racial justice

Delta Beer Labs has worked to become a Certified LGBT Business Enterprise through the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce, and as a business staffed by mostly white people, has tried to fulfill the race component of Delta’s mission by being a welcoming, open environment.
“When an opportunity came up to amplify melanated voices by raising awareness and raising funds for people of color that are fighting the fight on the front lines, it was a no-brainer to get involved,” Piotrowski says.

Delta Beer Lab partners with a nonprofit each month and donates all tips — the brewery doesn’t take tips as employees are paid more than a living wage — but this Thursday after 4 p.m. all sales and tips of Delta’s Black IPA will go to Freedom Inc. See More…

bars reopen, carefully

Limited seating

Delta Beer Lab, a “social laboratory and taproom” on Badger Road, didn’t jump right in the first day they were allowed to reopen. Tim Piotrowski, who co-owns the business and goes by Pio, wanted to make sure their community was ready to return. The current plan is to open with reduced hours (2-6 p.m.) on Monday.

“Part of the reason we waited is we don’t want too many people,” Piotrowski said. “We don’t want to have to keep people away, but we have to open up. We can’t go a year until a vaccine.

“The folks who don’t believe this is real, who don’t want to take precautions, we’re worried they’re going to hurt our business.”

New Brewery to open in Madison

The craft beer explosion continues here in Madison. Delta Beer Lab is the newest brewery to come to the capitol city. They’re experimenting, formulating, and testing some new hoppy hypotheses when it comes to the chemistry of beer.

“Our walls are white, our floors are polished concrete, and most of our table surfaces are the exact same material you’ll find in a science lab,” said Chief Beer Officer Tim Piotrowski who goes by “Pio”.

“Pio” is the brains behind the science. He’s been brewing beers for 10 years now.

“One of the things I learned really early on in my career is to make beers for the guest,” said Pio. See More…

“We have an opportunity in business to be better. To not just take from our community, but to be a part of our community. To be responsible in employment, to be responsible with profit.”

BREWERY WITH A CONSCIENCE BREAKS GROUND ON MADISON’S SOUTH SIDE

Delta Beer Lab broke ground at Novation Campus this week and plans on serving Greater Madison by January 2019

MADISON, WI – August 29, 2018 – Delta Beer Lab began building out their space at 167 E. Badger Road this week, and plans to start serving the Greater Madison community with scientifically-backed brews by January 2019.

Founded by Tim “Pio” Piotrowski – who has a decade of professional brewing and brewery management experience, Delta Beer Lab will actively focus on doing good while doing well; where profit has its place only alongside doing good for the Madison community, the environment, and its employees. Piotrowski’s work has received award-winning recognition from the National Brewers Association, and all stages of his career have been intentional with this specific opportunity in mind.

“Our vision is to be a laboratory for excellence in beer, relationships, and society,” says Piotrowski. “We want to bring people together through quality, local, craft beer without barriers to gender, race, or sexual orientation.”

Delta Beer Lab is designed on a relatively small scale, allowing the opportunity to experiment with base recipes from around the world and a bounty of different ingredients – from yeast to malted barley and hops to fruits and spices. 10-12 types of beer will be available on tap and small batches of canned product will be available for purchase alongside various merchandise. Non-alcoholic craft sodas will be available for non-beer drinkers. Future expansion plans include a beer garden and commercial-grade kitchen for local food truck vendors to operate and serve their goods.

The space is designed to emulate a lab on a brewing and social level with white walls, black resin countertops, a two-story chalkboard with recipe notes, and a direct view into the brew house. A designated area will permanently feature ongoing local community initiatives and non-profit causes, and communal seating with limited electronics was an intentional design to encourage socialization, outreach, and experimentation with brews.

Angus-Young Associates is the architect of record and interior designer, and the general contractor is Supreme Structures. Delta Beer Lab will bring a desirable social entertainment venue to the mixed-use Novation Campus, and will join many existing companies including Exact Sciences, UnityPoint Health - Meriter, and Summit Credit Union. Novation Campus is centrally located along two of Madison’s primary thoroughfares (Beltline Highway at Rimrock Road and Highway 14) and offers unparalleled access to downtown Madison, Dane County, and the Interstate System. In addition, Novation is accessible via Madison’s network of bike paths and the Madison Metro bus system.
